Nightwater Crafting

Recipes live on a parchment menu. Milestones unlock them. Clay and oil are the silent gates.

Nightwater Crafting Guide

Crafting in Nightwater is not a 400-recipe wiki table. It is a parchment Select Craft screen with large icons — wooden plank highlighted, gears and bricks nearby — fed by whatever you have punched, harvested, or piped. Recipes unlock when resource milestones complete, not when you talk to an NPC.

This page is the logic of that menu, plus the demo-era gates that make people open Discord. Pair it with resources and buildings.

How a recipe appears

  1. Fill a milestone bar on a raw or intermediate resource.
  2. The craft (or the building that auto-crafts it) unlocks.
  3. You either hand-craft a stack or you unlock an assembler to do it slowly.
  4. The output is often itself a milestone (Wood Gear 58/100).

If the icon is dark, you are missing an ingredient or the milestone. If the icon is missing, you have not discovered the resource yet. Walk, punch, expand. See biomes.

Early crafts you will keep making

Wooden planks

The first “I am playing a factory game” item. Trees become wood become planks become structures. Keep a stack. Assemblers should eventually own this recipe.

Wood gears / stone gears

Gears show up constantly in primitive buildings. Stone gears feel like a jump when they appear. Playthroughs stall because gears want clay or extra stone. When a building will not craft, look at gears before you look at the wiki.

Bricks

Visible on the craft UI in press shots. They are the construction analog of planks once you are past pure wood. Desert-looking biomes in marketing probably eat more of them. In The Woods, craft what the milestone asks, not a warehouse.

Oil / wheat oil

Squeezed or looted. Primitive pipes have needed oil plus gears in current builds. Barrels near Dark Thicket have dropped wheat oil in videos. If you cannot pipe a harvester, this is the usual missing fluid.

Totals and totes

Playtests mentioned a wooden tote and other capacity tools. Treat extra carry as a quality-of-life craft, not a win condition. Machines beat bigger pockets.

Auto-crafting

Once an assembler exists, hand-crafting planks is a trap. The machine is slow; it is still faster than you if you were about to enter a minigame. Queue the recipe, pipe inputs if the building allows it, leave.

Playtest patch notes said mechanics would be better explained. If a recipe tooltip is still thin, the milestone menu’s flavor text is the second tooltip. Read both.

Ages as recipe packs

Sticks and stones, Bronze Age, Industrial Era, future: each age is a pack of recipes, not a cutscene. The demo lives in pack one. Do not hunt industrial recipes in The Woods. Do hunt every Woods recipe that unlocks a machine, because machines are how you survive later packs on 18 September 2026.

Common stalls

  • Pipe locked. Oil + gears. Gears may need clay.
  • Harvester locked. Wood milestone not finished, or you never opened the buildings list.
  • Assembler locked. You automated nothing and the game is still waiting for you to care about quotas.
  • Mountains recipe visible but dead. Demo preview. See demo.
  • I want to share a blueprint. You cannot. Single-player, single-player only.

How this wiki will stay honest

Exact numbers (four stone, ten planks) change in balancing. Playtest notes already promised cheaper permanent upgrades. We describe gates, not a datamine. If your client says three clay and this sentence says “clay is required,” both can be true.

When launch shuffles the menu, check updates and the automation guide rather than a screenshot from March.

Next crafts after the demo

Expect biome-specific intermediates: desert brick lines, snow or mushroom products, higher-tier gears, faster pipes. The 100+ buildings/crafts/buffs figure is a 1.0 claim. Until those icons exist in a public build, they are a promise, not a list.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Where is the Nightwater crafting menu?

A parchment Select Craft interface. Unlock recipes through resource milestones, then hand-craft or use an assembler.

What do I need for primitive pipes?

Current playthroughs spend oil and gears. Gears often need clay. Confirm on your craft screen.

Should I hand-craft forever?

No. Move planks and gears onto an assembler as soon as one exists, then go play minigames.

Why is a Mountains craft locked?

The demo previews Mountains with milestone items locked. That is intended, not a broken recipe.
