Getting Started in Nightwater

Wake up on the island, fill the first milestone bars, and build a tiny factory before the grind eats you.

Nightwater Getting Started

Nightwater drops you on a solitary island with a broken lighthouse in the distance and no visible arms. The first action is almost comic: walk up to a stylized tree and punch it. That is the entire tutorial. Discovery toasts tell you that wood exists, then stone, then wheat. From there the game is a milestone engine wearing a foraging coat.

This page is the first-hour route for the Steam demo and for launch day on 18 September 2026. It assumes you already checked system requirements and controls. For the five-verb loop, use How to Play. If you only want to know what the demo contains, jump to the demo guide. If you stall on quotas, use early game tips.

What you are actually doing

Studio Ashty describes Nightwater as forage, craft, and automate: start with sticks and stones, grow a factory, unlock ages, expand the island, and eventually reach the Lighthouse. Official copy lists 20+ resources, 60+ buildings, and 100+ buildings, crafts, and buffs. You will not see most of that in hour one. You will see milestone bars.

Every resource has a personal progression. Gather it by hand or with machines until the bar fills. Rewards are new buildings, recipes, and buffs. The parchment Milestones menu — the one that shows icons such as Wood Gear with a fraction like 58/100 — is the real quest log. If you ignore it, you will punch trees until your wrists hurt and wonder why nothing new appears.

First ten minutes

  1. Look around. You are first-person, cel-shaded, standing on a small landmass ringed by impassable mountains and a void sea. The lighthouse is a direction, not a button.
  2. Punch trees until wood unlocks, then keep going until the first wood milestone pays out. Playthroughs often sit around a few dozen wood before the next tier; treat the on-screen number as truth, not a wiki rumor.
  3. Punch rocks for stone. Stone is not optional flavor. Early crushers and gears need it.
  4. Wander the starting forest. Wheat can appear as a discovery while you are still thinking only about trees. Pick it up; oil and food-adjacent crafts show up sooner than you expect.
  5. Open the craft menu when it unlocks. Early outputs you will keep seeing: wooden planks, wood gears, bricks, and later stone gears.

If a toast says you discovered a resource, go find a second node of it. Nightwater rewards spreading out just enough to feed the next machine, not strip-mining one grove.

The first factory, not the thousandth tree

The moment you can craft a wooden harvester, place it on a dense tree patch. Then craft a primitive chest (playthroughs show capacity 30 versus a harvester’s 20) and a primitive pipe. Connect harvester output to the chest. That is the whole joke of the genre: you just bought your time back.

Do the same for stone when the primitive rock crusher appears. Official and playtest descriptions say it can harvest rock, clay, and ore in a small radius. Clay is easy to miss because it does not look as important as wood. It is. Several gear crafts stall without it.

Read the dedicated automation guide as soon as pipes exist. Buildings can be moved or dismantled with no resource loss, which is a core design promise. If your first layout is ugly, tear it down. You are not being punished.

Resource checklist for The Woods

Use this as a shopping list, then jump to the resources page for context:

  • Wood — trees; feeds planks, early gears, harvesters.
  • Stone — rocks; feeds crushers and later gears.
  • Clay — often near stone patches; gates some crafts.
  • Wheat — fields in the starting biome; leads toward oil-style products.
  • Ore — appears as you push the stone line; needed for later ages.
  • Planks, gears, oil — crafted, not punched. Pipes in particular want oil and gears in current builds.

Do not memorize a fake full database. The demo and launch still iterate. If a recipe on screen disagrees with this page, trust the game.

Expand the island when the prompt appears

Nightwater does not unlock the next biome by walking far enough. You manifest land. Demo objectives tell you to expand the island to unlock the last forest chunk, then to enter the Dark Thicket. That minigame is optional for the main ending of the demo, but it is the intended break while harvesters run. See minigames before you ignore it for two hours.

The biomes walkthrough covers The Woods, the Mountains preview, and the desert and snow spaces shown in press shots. Hour one should stay in the forest until wood, stone, and a one-belt factory are stable.

Story can wait

The lighthouse speech at the start (“a shore you shaped, a prison you chose”) is flavor. Studio Ashty says the story is fully optional: anyone can reach the end without engaging, but only players who search unlock all four endings and secret areas. If you came for factories, skip environmental rooms until you are bored of pipes. If you came for mystery, bookmark the Lighthouse guide and start noting odd doors.

Common first-hour mistakes

  • Never placing a chest. Harvester inventory is small. Overflow is wasted time.
  • Crafting gears before clay. You will stall and think the game is broken.
  • Ignoring the milestone menu. It is the tech tree.
  • Treating minigames as DLC. Dark Thicket resources buy factory buffs.
  • Waiting for friends. Nightwater is single-player. It is single-player only.

What to open next

After your first pipe works, read automation and buildings. If the demo timer is what you care about, use the demo guide. If you want a blunt “should I wishlist this?” take, read the review. For launch timing, use the release date page.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do I need to punch trees forever in Nightwater?

No. Place a wooden harvester, a primitive pipe, and a chest as soon as they unlock. That is the point of the automation guide.

What is the first biome called?

The Woods. The Steam demo includes that biome’s full milestone track. Details live on the demo and biomes pages.

Is the story required to progress?

No. Studio Ashty says the story is optional. Factory milestones unlock buildings whether or not you chase the four endings.

Can I play with a friend?

Nightwater is single-player only. Share islands only as screenshots.
