Nightwater Buildings
More than 60 machines in the full game. The demo only needs a handful — if you place them.
Buildings are how Nightwater stops being a punching simulator. Official features: construct a factory with over 60 buildings, farmers, assemblers, storage, and pipes; no placement cap; move or dismantle with zero loss. The demo uses a small subset. This page is that subset, plus the rules that will still matter on 18 September 2026.
Rankings live on the buildings tier list. Recipes that feed buildings live on crafting. The loop that uses them is automation.
Rules that apply to every building
- Refunds are real. The marketing line is “stress-free building.” If your hologram looks stupid, pick the thing up.
- Inputs and outputs. Playtest notes said every box should have both. If a chest cannot receive a pipe, you are looking at an old clip or a bug worth reporting on Discord (links).
- Radius is small. Harvesters and crushers do not vacuum the whole island.
- Build mode draws a bright green hologram. Rotate, nudge, confirm. It works in forest and desert shots alike.
- Single-player. You cannot share a factory. There is single-player only construction.
Early producers
Wooden harvester
Place on trees. First automation you should rush. Inventory around 20 in playthroughs, which is why it needs a chest. If you only build one machine in the demo, build this.
Primitive rock crusher
Described in playthroughs as automatically harvesting rock, clay, and ore in a small radius. That triple duty is why it outranks a second decorative wood machine once stone is the gate. Put it where those nodes overlap.
Farmers / plant formers
Official copy lists farmers. Playtests mentioned a primitive plant former. Same job: plants should not require you to jog laps around wheat. Unlock, place, walk away.
Storage and logistics
Primitive chest
Capacity around 30 in footage — larger than the harvester. This is a buffer, not a base decoration. Every producer should dump into one.
Primitive pipe
Short range, low throughput, connects inventories. Costs oil and gears in current crafts. It is not a belt you run across the void sea. Cluster machines. If you want Factorio spaghetti, you will be underwhelmed; if you want “I can leave,” you will be fine.
Crafters
Assembler / auto-crafter
Slow, simple recipes, low construction. Milestone text in playthroughs calls out autocrafting. Use it for planks and gears once manual crafting is the new bottleneck. Do not build five of them before your harvesters are piped.
Squeezer
Appears in early footage next to plant formers. Treat it as the machine that turns plant stuff (wheat) into fluids (oil). Oil is a pipe ingredient. That is the only reason most players should care in hour two.
Everything else in the “60+”
The full list is launch content: more harvesters, higher-tier storage, industrial pipes, biome-specific producers. Minigames unlock some of those buildings as rewards — another reason to play Dark Thicket instead of treating it as a toy.
Until Studio Ashty publishes a complete encyclopedia, this wiki will not number every frame of the build menu. If a building appears in your HUD, it is valid. If a leak site lists 80 names, wait for updates.
Placement habits that save the demo
- Harvest the densest node, not the prettiest view of the lighthouse.
- Chest within pipe range before you go to the Thicket.
- After you manifest new land, move producers; do not start a second ugly base “because moving might cost wood.” It does not.
- Leave walking lanes. First-person cameras hate pipe forests.

Nightwater buildings are tools, not trophies. A lonely hologram in the desert looks cool in screenshots. A piped harvester looks like a game you might finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many buildings are in Nightwater?
The full game advertises 60+ buildings. The demo only needs harvesters, crushers, chests, pipes, and a few crafters.
Can I relocate buildings?
Yes. Official features allow moving or dismantling any building with no resource loss.
What should I build first?
Wooden harvester, primitive chest, primitive pipe. Then a rock crusher. See the tier list.
Do pipes work like Factorio belts?
No. They are short, low-throughput links between inventories. Keep machines close.
