Nightwater Steam Demo
What you can finish before 18 September 2026 — and what the demo deliberately hides.
The Nightwater demo went live on Steam on 8 May 2026 and is scheduled to remain available until the full launch on 18 September 2026. It is the right way to decide whether Studio Ashty’s first commercial game is for you: a first-person automation sandbox with an optional mystery, not a trailer you watch once.
This page is the contents list. For the first-hour route inside the demo, use Getting Started. For pipes and harvesters, use automation.
What the developer says is in the demo
Studio Ashty (Amar Civic) posted the official breakdown:
- Full first area The Woods, including that biome’s milestone items and unlocks.
- Full first minigame Dark Thicket, including its progression and unlocks.
- A sneak peek at the Mountains biome and the Mountains minigame. You can look around; you cannot unlock that biome’s milestone items.
The same post asked players to report bugs and localization issues on Discord. The demo later received typo and translation fixes ahead of Steam Next Fest (15–22 June 2026).
How long it takes
Official wording: about one hour to reach the end of what is currently available, or around four hours if you explore everything. That matches the earlier public playtest, which quoted 60–90 minutes to the end of available content and about four hours for a completionist pass.
If you finish in 40 minutes, you skipped minigames, side rooms, or automation polish. If you are still punching trees at hour three, you missed the harvester and pipe loop.
What you will actually do
The demo teaches the whole Nightwater sentence:
- Discover wood, stone, wheat, and clay by hand in The Woods.
- Fill milestone bars to unlock crafts and buildings.
- Place a wooden harvester, a chest, and a primitive pipe so wood flows without you.
- Expand / manifest the island when the objective says so — you do not walk off the map into the next biome.
- Enter Dark Thicket, chop minigame-specific trees, spend resources on a parchment skill tree, and work toward the elder tree in the north.
- Peek at Mountains, then stop when milestone items refuse to unlock.
Machines keep operating while you are in a minigame. That is not flavor text. Park a production line, go chop the Thicket, come back to a full chest. Details sit on the minigames page.
What the demo is not
- It is not the Industrial Era. Ages beyond the forest line are launch content.
- It is not all five minigames. You get one complete loop plus a second preview.
- It is not the full 20+ resources or 60+ buildings. Those numbers describe the finished game.
- It is not a story dump. You can find atmospheric rooms (stone chambers, odd doors) but the four endings are a launch-scale hunt.
- It is not multiplayer. Nightwater stays single-player in demo and at launch.
Playtest lessons that still apply
The first public playtest ended 9 March 2026. Amar Civic listed follow-up work that landed in later builds and is worth expecting in the demo you download today:
- Bug fixes and quality-of-life.
- Better controller support (the store page now lists full controller support).
- All boxes with inputs and outputs.
- Clearer mechanic descriptions.
- Improved pacing.
- Cheaper permanent upgrades.
If you played that March build, do not assume the demo is identical. If you never played it, treat the demo as the current teacher.
Platform notes
Download the demo from the Steam store page. Windows 10 64-bit is the published minimum; Linux is also listed by several databases as a native target for the full game. Check system requirements before you install. Steam Cloud and achievements are listed for the product; treat demo achievement behavior as “maybe.”
A few Steam discussion posts mention UI/world resolution mismatch on 1920×1080. If the world slides off the monitor while the HUD stays put, try windowed mode or a different resolution before you write the game off.
How to give useful feedback
Studio Ashty repeatedly asks for feedback and linked a form next to the demo announcement. Join the Discord from official links. Useful reports: milestone that will not complete, pipe that drops items, localization typo, controller bind that does nothing. Less useful: “needs more content” — that is what 18 September is for.
After you finish the demo
Wishlist the full game so Steam pings you on launch morning. Read the biomes page to see what press screenshots show beyond the forest, skim the buildings tier list so you know which machines to rush, and keep the release date page handy for the 08:00 PDT unlock.
If you bounced off the art (cel-shaded, slightly seasick camera, Borderlands-adjacent lighting), watch the review before you refund your attention. Nightwater is deliberately eerie. That is the pitch, not a bug.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is the Nightwater demo free?
Yes. It is a free Steam demo. Wishlist the full game separately if you want the 18 September 2026 launch notice.
How long is the Nightwater demo?
About one hour to the end of available content, or around four hours if you explore everything, according to Studio Ashty.
Does the demo include all biomes?
No. You get the full Woods biome, a full Dark Thicket minigame, and a Mountains preview with milestones locked.
Will my demo factory carry into the full game?
Studio Ashty has not promised a save conversion in the posts we tracked. Plan to start a fresh island at launch unless an official patch note says otherwise. Watch updates.
